The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation into the stabbing of Southend West MP Sir David Amess. They are working closely with the Eastern Region Specialist Operations Unit (ERSOU) and Essex Police. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon has confirmed that the attack is now officially being treated as an act of terrorism.

Early inquiries suggest the motive may be connected to Islamist extremism. Essex Police responded to reports of a stabbing at an address on Eastwood Road North shortly after midday on Friday, 15 October.

Officers discovered a man suffering multiple stab wounds. Emergency services provided immediate medical assistance, but sadly Sir David Amess died at the scene. Specialist officers are supporting his family during this tragic time.

A 25-year-old British man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody at an Essex police station. Searches are ongoing at two London addresses linked to the suspect. Police believe the suspect acted alone and are not seeking anyone else at this time.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses, urging anyone with information or footage to come forward. Confidential calls can be made to 0800 789 321, or photos and videos can be submitted via the police website.
