South Yorkshire’s Barnsley has been officially designated as the UK’s first government-backed AI Tech Town, marking a significant milestone outside London and the South East. Residents will soon gain access to free artificial intelligence training and benefit from AI-enhanced public services across healthcare, education, and local government sectors.

The ambitious 18-month pilot scheme aims to create a national blueprint for smart technology adoption beyond the capital. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall announced plans to transform Barnsley into a cutting-edge AI testbed, promising faster hospital check-ins, smarter classrooms, and more efficient council services.

Key initiatives include AI systems designed to reduce hospital waiting times through improved check-ins and triage processes. Schools and Barnsley College will trial AI technology to enhance student outcomes and reduce teachers’ workloads. Additionally, local businesses will receive digital skills training at the new Seam Digital Campus.

Major technology companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, and Adobe have committed to supporting Barnsley’s AI ambitions by providing expertise and training. Sarah Walker, CEO of Cisco UK & Ireland, described AI as “more transformative than the internet itself,” highlighting the project’s potential to positively impact communities and workplaces.

Local leadership has strongly endorsed the initiative. Sir Stephen Houghton, Leader of Barnsley Council, called it “one of the most important investments in Barnsley’s history,” emphasizing its potential to boost the local economy. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard praised the region’s expanding digital ecosystem. Nobel Prize-winning Government AI Ambassador Simon Johnson stated, “Barnsley could guide us to an AI-powered future that puts people and their families first, and that builds stronger communities.”

The project prioritizes inclusivity, offering free digital skills courses for all ages through Barnsley College and the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology. Residents will also have opportunities to influence Barnsley’s AI development via “Tech Town Halls.”

Barnsley’s AI initiative aligns with a broader UK government push on technology, including free AI training for millions, Lanarkshire’s designation as an AI Growth Zone, and the launch of a £36 million AI supercomputer in Cambridge. Locally, Microsoft Copilot is already assisting social care services, and robot couriers are undergoing trials.

The £15 million South Yorkshire Institute of Technology campus will serve as the central hub for AI training and support, firmly establishing Barnsley as Britain’s emerging AI hotspot.
