The London Fire Brigade responded to a significant fire at a recycling centre located on Landmann Way, Bermondsey, south east London, shortly after 5.30pm on June 8. Approximately 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were deployed to tackle the blaze, which continued into the night.
Residents in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke caused by the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.
Fire crews from nearby stations including Deptford, Old Kent Road, and Greenwich attended the scene. Two 32-metre turntable ladders were used to fight the fire from above, while the Brigade’s Drone Team provided aerial support to the Incident Commander, enabling effective assessment and firefighting strategies.
Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield reported that the fire consumed a large quantity of refuse as well as the roof of a warehouse unit at the recycling centre. In addition, a van and a car were destroyed by the flames. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze just before midnight.
One man received treatment at the scene from the London Ambulance Service. Due to the significant smoke and presence of loose embers, residents were warned to keep doors and windows shut. They were also advised to douse any embers with water and to call 999 immediately if fires started near their homes.
The London Fire Brigade and other authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire at this busy south east London recycling facility.
