Chaos erupted on New Romney High Street late on Thursday night as a hooded vandal launched a hammer attack on two local businesses.

Shortly after 11pm on March 26, a man armed with a heavy club hammer went on a destructive rampage targeting Drive Motor Spares and Dearman Bartlett Independent Funeral Directors.

The attacker, dressed in black jogging bottoms with white stripes and white trainers, smashed every front and side window at the funeral directors and broke large front-facing windows at the motor spares shop. The total damage is estimated at around £50,000.

Despite the significant damage, both shops have confirmed they remain open for business and are determined to recover from the incident. They have appealed for assistance in identifying the culprit responsible for the vandalism.

Kent Police responded to reports of criminal damage shortly after 11pm. “Officers were called shortly after 11pm to reports of a disturbance involving criminal damage. The man fled the scene on foot,” said a police spokesperson.

Police investigations are ongoing, with initial enquiries underway. Anyone with information is urged to contact Kent Police on 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/48375/26.
