An East Midlands Railway train passed a red signal moments before crashing into the rear of another train in Elstow, near Bedford, on Friday evening. The collision resulted in the death of driver Shaun Burton, aged 60, and left over 100 passengers injured.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch confirmed that the train went past a red signal shortly before the collision, which occurred just after 5pm. Brakes were applied on the train nine seconds before the impact.
Train driver Shaun Burton tragically lost his life at the scene of the crash. The incident has also left eight passengers in critical condition following the collision.
More than 100 individuals were taken to hospital for treatment after the crash in Bedfordshire, highlighting the scale of the emergency response to the incident.
