A West Sussex woman who claimed severe anxiety left her housebound has been caught living the high life abroad, exposing a significant benefit fraud case. Catherine Wieland, 33, received more than £23,000 in benefits by insisting she was too ill to leave her home.

However, a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) investigation uncovered the truth. Wieland was spotted surfing, snorkelling, and ziplining during a sun-soaked holiday in Cancun, Mexico, contradicting her claims of being housebound.

The deception extended beyond her overseas trip. Officials found that Wieland visited Thorpe Park multiple times and regularly enjoyed nights out at pubs and restaurants. Despite claiming difficulties with basic tasks such as cooking and washing, she also indulged in beauty treatments and private dental care, all funded by taxpayers.

After returning from abroad, Wieland even faked a health reassessment, stating her condition had worsened. When confronted by authorities, she claimed she did not realise she was required to stay at home.

Wieland pleaded guilty to failing to declare changes in her circumstances. She was sentenced to 28 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to repay £23,662.

A government minister described the case as a “serious abuse” of the welfare system, emphasizing the harm caused to hardworking taxpayers and genuine benefit claimants. The DWP has pledged to continue cracking down on benefit fraud and encourages the public to report any suspicious claims immediately.
