Sign Theft Strikes Ashdown Forest: 16 Byelaw Signs Nabbed in Vandal Spree
Just days after 50 new byelaw signs were installed in Ashdown Forest, 16 have vanished. Volunteers set the signs up last week using grant money, but since the weekend, thieves have been striking.
Protecting a Precious Playground
PC Giancarlo Leone stressed the importance of the signs. “These byelaws protect the unique habitats of Ashdown Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of a stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,” he said. “They’re also there to keep visitors safe while enjoying the forest’s world-famous space and beauty.”
Who’s Stealing Our Signs?
Leone added, “It appears someone is systematically removing signs for unknown reasons. We urge the public to help catch those responsible before more signs disappear.”
Community Cash Goes to Waste
Kirsty Dirs, Clerk to the Board of Conservators of Ashdown Forest, expressed frustration. “The forest largely funds itself, and these signs were redesigned and paid for thanks to generous donations from local parish councils and community groups.” She called the thefts “incredibly disappointing” and begged anyone with info to come forward.
