Stalker drags victim down in shocking early morning attack
Matt Mellor, once of Kelmarsh Avenue, Leicester, followed a woman in her twenties along Wellingborough Road, Northampton, at around 1.50 a.m. on February 26, 2022. The towering 6ft 10in man grabbed her from behind and yanked her to the ground near Lutterworth Road, where he tried to rape her at knifepoint.
Heroic victim fights back, neighbour help forces attacker to flee
But the terrified woman didn’t go down without a fight. She screamed loudly and managed to draw attention from nearby residents. Mellor, spooked by the noise, fled the scene in his car.
Cops crack case fast with CCTV and local tips
Police swung into action, using CCTV footage, door-to-door inquiries, and help from local businesses. They tracked Mellor down and arrested him in Leicester that very day. At a court hearing in April, Mellor admitted to attempted rape, carrying a bladed weapon, and breaching a sexual harm prevention order.
Jail time served: Brutal attacker locked up for years
The court heard the attack was a horrifying ordeal for the woman who simply wanted to walk safely at night. Her bravery in fighting Mellor off was praised. Last week, Northampton Crown Court sentenced Mellor to six years and eight months in prison, plus an eight-year extension.
