Keynsham Man Found Guilty of Rape After Online Date Turns Dark
Malcolm Compton, from Carpenters Lane, Keynsham, was convicted yesterday at Salisbury Crown Court after just 90 minutes of jury deliberation.
From Online Chats to Nightmare
Compton met his victim through a dating website in September 2020. They chatted online for a week before meeting in person. The victim was clear: she wanted friendship, not romance.
But once she moved in, Compton’s true colours showed. He pressured her into sex and started controlling her every move.
Horrific Attack Reported the Next Day
On Friday, 11 September, Compton raped the victim. She bravely reported the crime to Wiltshire Police the very next day.
“I would like to pay tribute to the victim in this case for her bravery in reporting this despicable crime and supporting us in our subsequent investigation – during which she has shown real inner strength and dignity throughout,” said Detective Constable Jeremy Horner.
“Compton showed a callous disregard for the physical and emotional damage inflicted on a woman simply seeking companionship. He ignored her repeated pleas to leave her alone, satisfying only his cruel desires.”
Sentencing Looms
Judge Barnett warned Compton to prepare for a hefty sentence. He is due back at Winchester Crown Court on 18 March for sentencing.
