Police Probe Abuse Allegations at Wrexham Hospital

North Wales Police launched an investigation after Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board reported allegations on 24 March involving a vulnerable patient. The case centers on possible abuse of position and ill-treatment at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

A nursing staff member was arrested but has since been released on police bail. The health board is fully cooperating with the ongoing police inquiry, though precise details remain under wraps.

Health Board Takes Action Amid Scandal

Betsi Cadwaladr has started internal disciplinary procedures and put safety measures in place to protect patients. A helpline will soon open for staff, patients, or anyone with concerns about the case.

Deputy CEO Gill Harris said: “We were recently made aware of allegations against a member of staff regarding a vulnerable patient and immediately referred the matter to North Wales Police.

“Whilst we are working with all relevant authorities, this remains a matter under police investigation. Therefore we will not be making any further comment at this time.”

Wales’ Biggest Health Board Under Pressure

Betsi Cadwaladr is the largest health board in Wales, serving over 700,000 people across the north. After being under special measures for more than five years, it finally came out of them in November 2020.

However, the board recently received a stern warning to fix service problems immediately, following two troubling incidents. These issues forced plans to send some North Wales vascular patients for treatment in England.
