BMW Driver Jailed for Life Over Killer Crash That Claimed Kerrin’s Life

A reckless BMW driver has been handed a life sentence after a deadly crash that killed Kerrin in Dovercourt back in April 2020. Keith McCarthy, 42, must serve at least 22 years before he can even dream of parole.

Hit-and-Run Horror on Marine Parade

Kerrin was riding his moped along Marine Parade when McCarthy’s BMW smashed into him. The impact also left a woman in her 70s with life-changing injuries after Kerrin’s moped skidded into her.

Instead of helping his victims, McCarthy fled the country, trying to dodge justice.

Manhunt and Trial: Justice Locked In

Thanks to a tireless, 24/7 hunt by Kent and Essex Serious Crime officers, the National Crime Agency, and a £5,000 Crimestoppers reward, McCarthy was tracked down and dragged back to the UK to face charges.

He claimed the crash was accidental, but a Chelmsford Crown Court jury saw through his story. Evidence showed McCarthy deliberately weaved through traffic and accelerated before hitting Kerrin. Adding fuel to the fire, McCarthy had also recently assaulted Kerrin over a money dispute.

Life Behind Bars and a Long Driving Ban

On Thursday 3 November, St Albans Crown Court sentenced McCarthy to life behind bars with a minimum 22-year term. He’s also banned from driving for 31 years.

Detective Superintendent Scott Egerton said: “All officers and staff involved have been determined to secure justice for Kerrin and the woman injured. This investigation was a brilliant team effort across multiple agencies. Our hard work convinced the jury beyond doubt that McCarthy murdered Kerrin. We’re proud and honoured to have played a part. We’re also grateful for the support of Kerrin’s family and the injured woman during this difficult time.”
