Armed Forces Member Arrested Over Official Secrets Breach

Thomas Newsome Detained Under Official Secrets Act

Thomas Newsome, 36, a serving member of the UK Armed Forces, was arrested on Tuesday 18 April under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE). Police secured a further detention warrant from Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 20 April, keeping Newsome in custody until 22 April.

Charged With Serious Offences

Late on Friday 21 April, Newsome was charged with offences under sections 2 and 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1989. These charges relate to the unauthorised disclosure of classified information.

Next Court Appearance At Westminster

Newsome remains in police custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 22 April. The case raises serious questions about security breaches within the Armed Forces.
