Violent Attack on Police: Parolee Fights Officers at Southend Station
Sam Langley’s routine visit to Southend Police Station on 12 August 2019 turned into a violent brawl. There to meet his parole conditions, Langley was told he had an outstanding warrant. Instead of complying, he launched a brutal attack on officers.
Langley Punches Two Officers, Causes Serious Injuries
When officers moved to arrest Langley at the front counter, he tried to walk past and flee. One officer tried to restrain him, but Langley pushed and punched him multiple times. Then he swung at a second officer, landing a blow that knocked him backward. The officer hit his head on a radiator, needing six staples and lip stitches.
Despite being outnumbered, Langley fought on until backup arrived. Once in a holding cell, he spat at and slapped another officer, forcing staff to place a spit guard over his head.
Convicted and Sentenced for Assaulting Emergency Workers
The 26-year-old from Harrington Road, Southend, was charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. Langley denied the charges but was found guilty after a trial at Basildon Crown Court on 22 September 2020.
On 14 October, he was sentenced to three years in prison.
Detective Constable Rory Scarlett said: “Sam Langley carried out a violent attack on two officers as they tried to carry out their duties. He had an outstanding warrant but was intent on avoiding it. Instead, he assaulted officers, leaving one seriously injured.
“No one goes to work expecting to be attacked, and police officers are no different. When it happens, we will prosecute and bring offenders to justice.”
