Man Drives at 80mph to Knock Motorcyclist Off Bike in Shocking Kill

Paul Barrett, 42, from Mere, faced Winchester Crown Court today after pleading guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.

Deadly Road Rage on a Quiet Wiltshire Road

On the evening of December 22, 2021, Barrett was driving a Volkswagen Touran along the B3089 Hindon Road in Dinton when he spotted motorcyclist Ryan Brindley riding alone in the opposite direction.

Instead of passing, Barrett performed a U-turn onto a side road, then accelerated recklessly—hitting speeds up to 80mph in a 30mph zone—to chase Ryan down. He collided with the back of Ryan’s bike, sending it rolling forward and Ryan crashing to the ground. Tragically, Ryan died at the scene.

Dash Cam Captures Deadly Encounter

The court viewed dash cam footage from Barrett’s car showing the chilling moments leading up to the crash. It reveals Barrett cruising around before zeroing in on Ryan, who appears to have been randomly targeted. Police confirm there was no prior connection between the two.

Following the crash, Barrett was arrested and hospitalised for assessment before being taken into police custody.

Community Mourns as Police Pay Tribute

“The killing of Ryan Brindley was an entirely random and unprovoked incident that has understandably shocked the local community and devastated those who knew him,” said Detective Chief Inspector Simon Childe.

Childe also paid tribute to Ryan’s family for their strength during the investigation and thanked police teams for their tireless work to bring justice.

Ryan’s partner spoke movingly about the loss: “Ryan was a beautiful human being – he will be missed by so many. He was deeply private and would hate this attention. Please respect the family’s privacy.”

This tragic incident has rocked the Wiltshire community and shone a harsh spotlight on road safety and random acts of violence.
