Ex-Scout Leader Jailed Over Sick Child Abuse

Groomed Boy From Age 12

Graham Avison, from Audenshaw, was locked up for five years and seven months after pleading guilty to four counts of indecent assault against a child. The Minshull Street Crown Court also slapped him with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He must now sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

The vile abuse spanned four years between 1991 and 1995. Avison was a scout leader who first met his victim when the boy was just 12. The abuse began when the victim was 14.

Prized Gifts and Trips Used to Groom Victim

Avison hooked the boy with small treats like chocolate bars before cranking it up to expensive gifts — even a car. He owned a Catamaran moored in Wales and often took the boy and others on boat trips and to boat shows nationwide.

The abuse mostly happened during overnight stays on the boat, in hotels, and at Avison’s home. It was a calculated betrayal by someone trusted to protect children.

Police Praise Victim’s Courage

“I would first and foremost like to thank the victim for coming forward,” said Detective Sergeant Wayne Marshall, GMP’s Tameside division.

“Their bravery throughout the entire investigation has resulted in a dangerous paedophile facing justice. Avison is a predator who abused his position of trust, leaving psychological scars that will last a lifetime.

“The exploitation of children is a top priority for GMP. We take reports of this nature very seriously and encourage anyone affected to come forward.”
