The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has increased its support for the Metropolitan Police after a number of armed officers handed in their firearms. This development comes in the wake of Scotland Yard’s turmoil surrounding an officer charged with the murder of Chris Kaba.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has announced a full review following the surrender of weapons by several firearms officers, a move triggered by the high-profile case involving a marksman accused of killing Kaba.

The MOD confirmed it is prepared to provide assistance if required. An MOD spokesperson stated, “We have accepted a Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA) request from the Home Office to provide routine counterterrorism contingency support to the Metropolitan Police, should it be needed.”

On a recent Saturday night, officers from neighbouring forces were deployed to help patrol London amid ongoing protests, highlighting the increased pressure on the capital’s police service.

Suella Braverman emphasised the importance of supporting armed officers, stating that police “must not fear ending up in the dock or carrying out their duties.” Her firm stance is intended to reassure officers who have been unsettled by recent events.

The Chris Kaba case involves the fatal shooting of Kaba through a car windscreen in Streatham Hill, south-east London, in September 2022. Officer NX121 has been charged with murder and recently appeared in court.

In response to the situation, Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley met with 70 firearms officers across London to address the significant concerns within the armed ranks. A police spokesperson acknowledged these worries, saying they are “genuinely held” and taken seriously by police leadership.
