Criminal masterminds across Bedfordshire have been sentenced to more than 200 years behind bars after the collapse of the notorious encrypted messaging service, Encrochat. The platform served as a secret hub for criminals planning large-scale drug and weapons trafficking.
Launched in 2020, Operation Costello successfully cracked open Encrochat messages, revealing the inner workings of organised crime gangs in the region. Last week, three major drug dealers were sentenced to a combined total of 36 years for operating a network that distributed 200 kilos of cocaine valued at around £8 million.
Shane Dann, 31, from Cranfield, received 15 years in prison. Mohammed Shaukat, 38, from Luton, was sentenced to 13 years and 5 months. Ashley Cain, 32, also from Luton, was jailed for 7 years and 6 months for his role as a key drugs courier. All three admitted conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Cain acted as the foot soldier, transporting the drugs nationwide for the kingpins Dann and Shaukat.
Linda Carson, Lead Manager of Operation Costello, commented: “Bad things come in threes – and these convictions add to over 200 years of sentences handed down so far. Our team works tirelessly to beat high-level criminality and protect our communities.” Funded by special government grants, Operation Costello targets the most challenging organised crime issues affecting Bedfordshire.
Detective Superintendent Nick Skipworth, who leads the operation, urged the public to assist law enforcement efforts. “We’ve taken out key players behind drugs and violence. It’s a huge win, but we need the public’s eyes and ears. If you suspect someone’s involved in organised crime, tell us. Together, we can stop this.”
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Bedfordshire Police via their online reporting tool or by calling 101. To remain anonymous, individuals can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Additional support and information are available through Bedfordshire Against Violence and Exploitation (BAVEX).
Operation Costello represents Bedfordshire Police’s largest offensive against organised crime gangs, focusing on criminals using encrypted phones. This initiative forms part of the national crackdown known as Operation Venetic. By breaking Encrochat’s encryption, police uncovered the dark networks controlling serious crime across the UK, leading to over 200 years of jail sentences to date. The message is clear: no one is untouchable under the law.
