Repeat offender Colin Jones, 43, was apprehended just hours after being released from prison, after committing burglary and car theft in Ashington. Less than 24 hours following his release for a previous burglary conviction, Jones broke into a home on Bothal Terrace and stole a car in the early hours of December 15.
Jones ransacked the property, stealing a mobile phone, cash, and car keys. Hours later, the victim discovered their vehicle missing while preparing to start the school run. Thanks to the quick response from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols, the stolen car was recovered and returned undamaged to its owner before lunchtime.
Jones was arrested and taken into custody within 30 hours of his release from prison.
He was charged and remanded on the same day as his arrest. On January 18, Jones pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court. On February 3, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
Detective Constable Jon Mullen commented, “The saying ‘old habits die hard’ is particularly true in the case of Colin Jones. He celebrated his release with drinks before deciding to ‘gift’ himself a new car.”
“Sadly for Jones, he’s no mastermind at dodging the police. Officers caught him fast and charged him just as quickly.”
DC Mullen added, “No one deserves to have their home broken into and their possessions stolen. I hope Jones uses his time inside to reflect and plan for a better future.”
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness condemned burglary as an “invasive and upsetting crime” and praised the force’s rapid response.
McGuinness said, “Some people just can’t help but repeat their errors and refuse to change. It’s right they’re caught to keep communities safe and stop innocent people being targeted again and again.”
“Great work to all involved.”
