Chippenham Driver Banned for Three Years After Horrific Pedestrian Crash
Wayne Dyke, 61, handed tough sentence after causing serious injury by careless driving.
Red Light Runner Causes Devastating Crash
Wayne Dyke, from Danes Close in Chippenham, was slapped with a three-year driving ban following a shocking collision that left a man fighting for his life. The 61-year-old admitted careless driving causing serious injury at Swindon Magistrates Court on November 24.
At just before 8am on October 28, 2022, Dyke ignored red traffic lights at the junction of Hobley Drive and Ermin Street in Swindon. His Fiat Punto smashed into a pedestrian, a man in his 60s from Swindon, causing life-altering injuries.
Victim Left With Brain Injury and Lasting Trauma
The victim suffered a bleed on the brain and impaired vision. In a heart-wrenching victim impact statement, he revealed the cruel aftermath: “I now have to wear an eye patch and battle memory loss, headaches, and fatigue.”
“Mentally, I used to go out regularly to socialise. For the first four months, I couldn’t leave the house on my own. I don’t feel safe around crowds and still feel anxious crossing roads.”
Sentence: Suspended Jail and Unpaid Work
Dyke’s penalties included a suspended 22-month prison sentence, 200 hours of unpaid work, a £187 surcharge, and £425 in Crown Prosecution Service costs — on top of his driving ban.
PC Craig Beales from the Roads Policing Unit warned: “This case just highlights how important it is to pay full attention to the road at all times. A collision can occur in a split second and the impact it could have on someone’s life can be significant.”
