Brutal attacker who strangled girlfriend over ‘Are you okay?’ question walks free with suspended sentence
Violent Assaults Caught on Camera
Alex Durkin, 21, from Gibson Road, Dagenham, violently attacked his then-girlfriend twice while living in Greenwich. Durkin strangled and punched her after she repeatedly asked if he was “okay.” The horrifying moments were caught on video during the first attack in August 2024, showing Durkin grabbing her throat for 30 seconds while she struggled to breathe and begged him to stop. He then punched her in the face and ripped a radiator from the wall in a terrifying rage.
The second attack, in February 2025, saw Durkin smash the victim’s laptop in half and punch her in the eye during a heated TV-watching session.
Durkin Avoids Immediate Jail Despite Serious Charges
Durkin pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, two counts of assault, and criminal damage. But on Tuesday, April 29, Woolwich Crown Court handed him a one-year prison sentence – suspended for 18 months. He must also complete 100 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation days.
Defence lawyer Miss Wilson told the court Durkin was “extremely remorseful” and claimed this was his first offence, linked to the recent death of his grandmother. She added he had left Greenwich and secured two job offers, including one at Dulwich College.
“Speaking to him today, he is absolutely determined to never come back before the court and has learnt a very hard lesson,” said Miss Wilson.
Recorder Alex Stein acknowledged the gravity of domestic violence but accepted the mitigating factors when passing the suspended sentence.
Outrage and Calls for Tougher Sentences
The case has sparked fury among South London domestic abuse groups demanding tougher, consistent sentencing for violent offenders. They warn that lenient punishments risk escalating abuse into even more serious crimes. Early intervention, they say, is key to preventing tragedy.
