Police in Stoke-on-Trent were stunned when they stopped a driver on Boxing Day and discovered an extraordinary 96 penalty points on their licence. The 23-year-old was driving a Vauxhall Astra on Christine Street in Bucknall without insurance, which led to the initial stop.
Officers quickly found that the driver was already disqualified from driving. With 96 penalty points accumulated, questions arose about how the individual was still allowed on the roads. Staffordshire Police immediately seized the vehicle.
The driver was issued citations for driving uninsured and while disqualified. Their driving ban has now been extended, preventing them from driving until 2027.
Staffordshire Police have stated they intend to refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service to seek a custodial sentence due to the serious nature of the offences. A police spokesperson said, “To rack up 96 points, this driver must have repeatedly ignored penalties and kept driving.”
The public reacted with shock and anger online, with many calling for tougher penalties, including lifetime driving bans for those who accumulate large numbers of penalty points.
For context, UK driving laws state that accumulating 12 or more penalty points within three years can result in a six-month driving ban, with a lower threshold of six points for new drivers. Repeat offences can lead to longer bans of one to two years.
This case serves as a strong warning about the dangers of ignoring traffic laws and highlights the importance of adhering to road safety regulations.
