Michael Webb, 35, has been sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison following a tragic crash that claimed the lives of his brother and nephew in South Shields.

At Newcastle Crown Court this morning, Webb was convicted on two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. Evidence presented in court showed that Webb was under the influence of cocaine when his Skoda Octavia lost control.

The fatal collision happened just before 9pm on Saturday, August 30, on John Reid Road in South Shields, South Tyneside. Webb’s vehicle first struck a lamppost before crashing into a tree, resulting in the deaths of his passengers.

Peter Webb, 40, and his 12-year-old son Ben Webb died instantly at the scene of the crash. Michael Webb, who lives on Park Avenue, South Shields, initially pleaded guilty to careless driving but later changed his plea to dangerous driving in January.

In a heartfelt tribute, the family expressed their grief, stating, “Our world has been completely torn apart.” They described Peter as “a kind wonderful human who would do anything for his family” and Ben as “an incredible ray of sunshine with an unbelievable sense of humour.”

Northumbria Police confirmed the sentencing and issued a strong warning about the dangers of drug-driving on UK roads.
