A 23-year-old man from Lyneham has been convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman in a disturbing attack that took place in a Swindon car park. Rooney Gardi, who lives on Calne Road, Lyneham, committed the assault in the early hours of June 30, 2024, at the Dammas Lane car park, according to Swindon Crown Court.

The victim was found unconscious by members of the public, suffering from serious injuries to her face and body. She had no memory of the attack and was missing her underwear. Police and medical experts later carried out examinations to collect important evidence related to the case.

Detective Constable Anna McCormack of Wiltshire Police CID described Gardi as a “sexual predator” who targeted a vulnerable young woman. She said, “Gardi admitted sexual contact but denied the more serious charge. He took advantage of a young girl who was vulnerable.”

DC McCormack praised the victim for her bravery throughout the investigation despite the trauma and memory loss she experienced. She also thanked the members of the public and community wardens who found the victim, stating, “Their quick actions in calling police and securing the scene preserved vital evidence.”

Rooney Gardi remains in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 14. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of community vigilance and support for victims of sexual violence.

DC McCormack urged anyone affected by sexual assault to come forward, reassuring the public that Wiltshire Police take these crimes seriously. She said, “People should be able to enjoy a night out without fear. If you believe you’ve been sexually assaulted, we will investigate fully.”

Victims seeking support or wishing to report incidents can do so through Wiltshire Police’s official website.
