Death Mystery in Hornchurch Flat: Man Found Dead with Cause Unknown

Body Discovered After Forced Entry

An investigation is underway after the unexplained death of 34-year-old Zilvinas Mockus, found unresponsive in his Hornchurch flat on January 2. His ex-partner, along with his carer and building manager, forced entry after growing worried over his silence. Paramedics arrived quickly but pronounced him dead at the scene on High Street.

Inquest Opens Amid Unclear Cause

The inquest formally opened on March 11 at East London Coroner’s Court in Walthamstow, led by coroner Nadia Persaud. Despite a post-mortem, doctors could not determine the cause of death. “This death occurred in circumstances requiring an inquest,” Persaud said, stressing the need to find out if it was natural, accidental, or preventable.

Family and Authorities Demand Answers

Mr Mockus, a Lithuanian national, was identified through passport and custody photos. His family has been named “interested persons,” giving them the right to access evidence and question witnesses. The coroner requested the family provide background on his family life, work, mental and physical health, and last contact. They are also encouraged to share any concerns about his death.

Evidence Gathering in Full Swing

Coroner Persaud has called for crucial documents from public services including:

  • Statements from police officers at the scene
  • Records from the London Ambulance Service
  • GP medical records
  • Reports from mental health and secondary care providers

Officials confirm the death is not currently being treated as suspicious. However, the final inquest hearing is pencilled in for August 15, 2025, as the search for answers continues.
