David Carrick, the disgraced former Metropolitan Police officer found guilty of 24 rapes and 49 other crimes spanning 17 years, has had 65% of his police pension revoked. This severe action was enforced by Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, sending a strong message that abusing power results in losing everything.

From 2003 to 2020, Carrick preyed on 12 victims while serving in one of Britain’s most trusted police forces. His horrific abuse of trust, carried out under the guise of law enforcement, has shocked the nation. Although he was dismissed for gross misconduct in January 2023, only his employer pension contributions can be legally confiscated, not his personal contributions.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the crimes, stating, “David Carrick blatantly abused his position of trust as a police officer to carry out his appalling crimes.” He praised the pension reduction, emphasizing that employer contributions must be stripped away.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched investigations into how Carrick’s cases were handled by serving and former Met officers. The scandal has revealed significant issues within the Met’s culture. In response, the Metropolitan Police introduced a 10-point plan in December aimed at eliminating sexism and misogyny within its ranks. This strategy includes enhanced victim support and specialized training to identify and address abusive behaviour among officers and staff.

Victims of sexual violence are encouraged to come forward and access dedicated support services. The Met’s specialised units are prepared to investigate all reports thoroughly.

The decision to slash David Carrick’s pension serves as a firm reminder that those who betray the public’s trust while wearing a badge will face the harshest punishments, both financial and criminal. It stands as a clear warning to all serving officers: abuse your position, and there will be no escaping the consequences.
