Assistant Head Teacher Caught With 11,500 Child Abuse Images

Gareth Mellor, 43, an assistant head teacher from Yorkshire, has admitted to making more than 11,500 indecent images and videos of children. The National Crime Agency (NCA) launched a tough investigation that uncovered Mellor’s shocking online activities.

Safeguarding Lead’s Dark Secret

Mellor wasn’t just any teacher – he was the safeguarding lead at a high school in Wakefield, responsible for the welfare of children. Authorities tracked him down after tracing a Bitcoin payment he made to buy indecent images via an encrypted cloud storage service. His position of trust has shocked the local community.

Bitcoin Trail Leads to Arrest

Using blockchain technology, the NCA linked Mellor to payments for illegal content across multiple online platforms. In May 2021, officers raided his home in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, seizing devices with cryptocurrency apps and files connected to the cloud storage.

Deleted Evidence Didn’t Save Him

Forensic experts uncovered a horrifying stash of over 11,500 images and videos spanning categories A to C. Mellor even tried to cover his tracks by accessing his accounts and deleting files while out on bail – but investigators caught him red-handed.

Justice on the Horizon

Mellor pleaded guilty in Leeds Crown Court to three charges of making indecent images of children. His sentencing is set for 7 December 2023.

Danielle Pownall, NCA Operations Manager, slammed Mellor’s betrayal: “We are determined to tackle child abuse in all forms.” She confirmed Mellor was fired after his arrest. There is no evidence his crimes involved his students. The probe also uncovered another individual linked to Mellor’s accounts who is now under investigation.
