Southwick Man Jailed for 24 Years Over Shocking Abuse Spree

A Southwick man has been slapped with a hefty 24-year prison term for repeatedly raping and assaulting a woman over several years. Shaun Clarke, 53, was found guilty of multiple horrific crimes after police were called to a Southwick property on 18 October 2023.

Disturbing Assaults Uncovered

Officers arrived following reports that Clarke was trying to break into the property, demanding money, and making violent threats. They soon spoke to a woman in her 40s who bravely revealed years of physical and sexual abuse at Clarke’s hands.

“Clarke sought to control her every move, isolating her from friends. He would rape and assault her whenever he disapproved of her behaviour,” said the victim, whose young children witnessed some of the appalling violence.

Clarke lived at Whiterock Place, Southwick, and also repeatedly demanded money from the victim, culminating in the violent incident that triggered the police call-out. When arrested later that day, Clarke attacked a female police officer, injuring her hand.

Convicted of Multiple Crimes, Sentenced to Long Prison Term

Clarke pleaded guilty to five counts of rape, two counts of assault, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assaulting an emergency worker.

On Friday 12 July at Lewes Crown Court, he was sentenced to 24 years—19 years behind bars plus a five-year licence period. He also received an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a Restraining Order to protect the victim and the public.

Justice Served for Victim and Family

The harsh sentence reflects the grave nature of Clarke’s crimes and the devastating impact on his victim and her family. The court’s tough stance aims to deliver justice and shield the community from future harm.
