Swindon teenager Thierry Holness, aged 18, has been handed a suspended sentence following a serious crash that injured a Wiltshire Police officer during a reckless stunt on his electric bike.
The incident occurred on the night of 13 January 2024, when Holness, then 17 years old, was seen riding carelessly at the junction of Faringdon Road and Westcott Place. Police officers were waiting in a marked vehicle at around 11:20 p.m. when one officer stepped out to confront Holness.
Instead of stopping, Holness collided with the officer, causing severe injuries that required hospital treatment and a difficult recovery period.
At Swindon Crown Court, Holness pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years. In addition, he must complete 225 hours of unpaid work, attend up to 35 rehabilitation activity days, pay a £41 victim surcharge, and face a 30-month driving ban. He will also need to pass an extended competency test before regaining his driving licence.
Chief Constable Catherine Roper condemned Holness’ dangerous behaviour, stating: “Wiltshire Police officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe. This incident, where one of our own was hurt while doing his job, is completely unacceptable.”
She added, “We hope this sentence sends a clear warning – dangerous behaviour on our roads won’t be tolerated. Those responsible will face the full force of the law.”
Wiltshire Police have reminded all electric bike riders to follow safety regulations, including proper licensing, insurance, and adherence to the law. For more information, riders are encouraged to visit the Wiltshire Police website or the GOV.UK site.
