Police have arrested a teenage girl following the dramatic closure of the A14 in Ipswich yesterday. The major road was shut after concerns for a woman’s welfare near Nacton prompted a significant emergency response.
At around 11:40 am, officers responded to reports of a female in distress. The emergency response involved police, negotiators, ambulance crews, fire services, and National Highways officials. The tense situation was safely resolved by 4:25 pm, allowing the A14 to reopen in both directions just 20 minutes later.
The teenage female was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance linked to the incident. She was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and was later released under investigation while inquiries continue.
The disruption did not end there. A 59-year-old Ipswich man, Mark Wymer of Hurricane Place, was also arrested after confronting police and negotiators with abusive behaviour. He faced charges of obstructing officers and carrying a lock knife in public. Wymer has since been released on bail and is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on March 18, 2024.
Authorities emphasised that closing the A14 is never a decision taken lightly. Considerations include the impact on local residents, public risk, and wider community safety. Efforts are always made to minimise disruption wherever possible.
