Speed cameras in the UK are getting smarter and harder to evade. Thanks to tech upgrades, more drivers are getting caught speeding than ever before.
Yellow Speed Cameras: Easier to Spot?
Back in 2016, the Department for Transport ordered all speed cameras to be painted bright yellow. The aim? Make them impossible to miss. But despite the splash of colour, some cameras stay stealthy thanks to their long-range capabilities.
The ‘Long Ranger’ Cameras Are Watching You
Meet the newest breed of speed traps: the ‘Long Ranger’. These bad boys can catch drivers over 1km away – the farthest range on UK roads so far.
But it’s not just speed they spot. The Long Ranger cameras also nab motorists breaking other laws, like not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones behind the wheel.
Experts Warn: Don’t Be Caught Off Guard
“This new long-range camera could be used to crack down on mobile phone use or tailgating, but its main job will be catching speeders,” said RAC road safety boss Pete Williams.
“Many drivers will be stunned when they get a letter saying they’re facing prosecution – even if they thought they’d slowed down after spotting a police car.”
Speeding Fines: What You’re Facing
- £100 minimum fine
- Three penalty points on your licence
If you’re a first-time offender with a clean record, you may be offered a speed awareness course instead of points.
With these new high-tech cameras already snapping up lawbreakers, the message is clear: stick to the speed limits or pay the price.
