Sanjay Dhari, 46, of Cypress Grove, Swindon, was caught driving with a staggering 165 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath — over four times the legal limit of 35. The incident happened on July 4 when Dhari turned up drunk at a Kwik Fit garage on Great Western Way for a vehicle check.
Garage staff quickly became alarmed as Dhari wobbled on his feet, crashed into a wall, and then passed out on the premises. Witnesses reported his highly intoxicated state, prompting urgent action.
Police swoop, Dhari fails breath test
Officers were called to the scene but Dhari was too drunk to take a roadside breathalyser. He was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a sample and taken into custody where subsequent tests confirmed his terrifying alcohol level.
Judge hits Dhari with suspended sentence and driving ban
At Swindon Magistrates Court on August 22, Dhari pleaded guilty to drink driving. He was slapped with an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, alongside a three-year driving ban.
PC Daniel Laurie condemned the dangerous stunt, blasting: “To be this intoxicated and in charge of a vehicle on our busy roads during rush hour is quite frankly absolutely disgraceful. It’s selfish, dangerous, and puts the lives of innocent road users at risk.”
More penalties and police warn public
Dhari also faces a nine-month alcohol treatment order, a £50 fine, a £154 surcharge, and £85 court costs. Wiltshire Police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on the “fatal five” driving offences, especially drink driving, urging the public to report suspicious behaviour without delay.
