Worcestershire Man Jailed for Deadly Drink-Drive Burger Run in Basingstoke
A Worcestershire man has been locked up for four years after a deadly drink-drive crash that killed a young driver in Basingstoke.
Drink-Drive Doesn’t Pay – Man Dead After Burger Run
Richard Storry, 34, from Evesham Road, Worcestershire, pleaded guilty to causing the death of 27-year-old Chris Burgess. Storry was over twice the legal alcohol limit when he crashed.
On the evening of May 12, Storry got behind the wheel of his parents’ Volkswagen Tiguan to drive from Lasham Airfield to Basingstoke – all for a burger.
Despite being heavily intoxicated, he drove a quarter of a mile on the wrong side of the A339 at Winslade before a head-on collision with Chris Burgess’s Volkswagen Golf.
Mr Burgess, from Alton, died at the scene.
Judge Sends Clear Message
Winchester Crown Court jailed Storry for four years and banned him from driving for three years.
“This sentence will never be able to make up for the devastation caused to the family of Mr Burgess, but I hope it sends a strong message to those who think it is OK to drink and drive – it is not worth the risk and we will not tolerate it,” said Police Sergeant Darren Ord from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit in Eastleigh.
Police Issue Stark Warning Amid Summer Crackdown
Sergeant Ord added: “Time and again we see the devastating consequences of drink driving. People ignore the dangers and think ‘it won’t happen to me’. But this tragic death could have been avoided if Storry hadn’t made the reckless decision to drive that night.”
Police are currently running a summer crackdown on drink and drug driving – and this case is a grim warning of what’s at stake.
