Thirteen people were arrested in Norwich city centre after police observed them displaying support for the banned terrorist group Palestine Action. The group assembled outside City Hall on St Peters Street on Sunday, waving flags and holding placards associated with the proscribed organisation.

A Norfolk Police spokesperson stated: “These people were all arrested on suspicion of displaying an item in support of a proscribed organisation, contrary to Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000.”

Of those arrested, five remain in custody at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, while the other eight were released after providing their personal details. Additionally, another protester had their sign confiscated and their information recorded by police.

Superintendent Wes Hornigold of Norfolk Police commented: “We will always facilitate peaceful protest and protect the democratic right to assembly. However, the actions of this group were unlawful. Our officers’ role is to prevent disorder, damage and disruption. They will use their powers accordingly. Any breaches of the law will be dealt with.”

The arrests in Norwich come amid a wider UK crackdown on supporters of Palestine Action. The Metropolitan Police recently announced that 60 more people will face prosecution for backing the group, which has been outlawed since July.

Nationwide, over 700 arrests have been made, including 500 in central London during a major protest earlier this month. The first three charges in England and Wales under the Terrorism Act related to Palestine Action were brought following a protest at Parliament Square on July 5.

Palestine Action was banned after claiming responsibility for damage to aircraft at RAF Brize Norton and being linked to serious assaults on police and staff at a Gloucestershire business.

Stephen Parkinson, Director of Public Prosecutions, issued a warning about the consequences of supporting the group: “A terrorism conviction can severely impact your life and career – it can restrict your ability to travel overseas and work in certain professions. People should be clear about the real-life consequences of supporting Palestine Action.”

Investigations into the Norwich arrests are ongoing.
