A serious fire erupted just after 4am on Thursday, 22 May 2025, at a mid-terraced property on Barking Road in East Ham. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) and London Ambulance Service (LAS) responded swiftly following multiple 999 calls received at 4:24am.

The blaze engulfed a two-storey house that had been converted into flats. It destroyed a shed, two motorbikes, and caused extensive damage to the front windows. The roof also suffered heavy fire damage, leaving the property badly affected.

Fortunately, eight people managed to escape the property before firefighters arrived. However, a woman and a child were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and were later taken to hospital as a precaution.

Firefighters from East Ham, Plaistow, Barking, and nearby stations deployed four fire engines and around 25 personnel to tackle the fire. They used an aerial ladder extending 32 metres to combat the blaze from above. The fire was brought under control by 6:15am, less than two hours after the emergency calls.

The London Fire Brigade, in cooperation with the Metropolitan Police Service, is currently investigating the cause of the fire. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, “Firefighters responded quickly to a serious blaze at a converted residential property on Barking Road. Thankfully, all residents evacuated safely before our arrival. The use of one of our aerial ladders allowed crews to effectively contain the fire from height.”

Witnesses with any information are asked to contact the Metropolitan Police non-emergency line on 101 or to provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
