Tragedy struck in the early hours on the A3 near Roehampton when a car and moped collided, resulting in the immediate death of the moped rider. The incident has prompted a full police investigation and a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after police attempts to stop the vehicle reportedly failed.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a stolen Range Rover failed to stop at around 12:30am, leading to a police pursuit. The chase ended when the Range Rover overturned after colliding with a motorbike. The rider of the motorbike was declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the Range Rover escaped without serious injury.

An IOPC spokesperson stated, “We have launched an independent investigation into the Metropolitan Police’s involvement prior to the fatal collision. Our investigators attended the scene early this morning to gather information.”

The stretch of the A3 near Putney Common remains closed for several hours as collision investigators examine the scene. Authorities have urged drivers to seek alternate routes and prepare for ongoing disruption.

The investigation is still at an early stage, with multiple agencies working together to determine how the crash occurred and any contributing factors. Our thoughts are with the family of the moped rider and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident.
