A huge fire tore through a residential block on Thornham Street, Greenwich, today (Thursday, August 17), sending thick smoke billowing across the area.
Firefighters rushed to the scene, deploying six engines and around 40 crew members to tackle the blaze.
The fire started at 2:46pm, prompting a rapid emergency response. Two people suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service medics. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
“Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters responded to a fire on Thornham Street in Greenwich. Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation,” confirmed a London Fire Brigade spokesperson. “We received over 20 calls reporting the fire.”
Fire teams from Greenwich, East Greenwich, and Lewisham stations worked together to extinguish the flames quickly. The Metropolitan Police assisted by closing roads to keep the public safe while firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution during the emergency. Authorities have stated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
