A man was arrested after repeatedly aiming a green laser at an active National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter over Beckton. The incident took place on the night of April 7, between 10:28pm and 10:50pm, and was described by police as an “incredibly dangerous” stunt.
Following reports of the laser targeting, officers from the Metropolitan Police responded quickly. They tracked down and arrested the suspect to prevent any harm to the helicopter crew and the public below.
Captain Paul Watts, head of NPAS flight operations, condemned the reckless behaviour. He emphasised the advanced technology on board their aircraft, including precise mapping and camera equipment, which helps pinpoint offenders swiftly.
“We will pursue action against offenders and support prosecution, which can lead to imprisonment,” Captain Watts stated firmly.
The incident serves as a stark warning about the dangers laser pointers pose to aircrew and public safety. Law enforcement agencies remain committed to protecting flying crews and taking strong action against those responsible for such attacks.
