A murder investigation is underway after a prisoner was fatally stabbed at HMP Dovegate, a Category B prison located near Uttoxeter that houses inmates from Stoke-on-Trent and surrounding areas.

The incident occurred shortly after 9am on Saturday, July 13. Police responded quickly following reports of a stabbing inside the prison. The 42-year-old male inmate was taken to hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

Staffordshire Police have arrested a 46-year-old prisoner on suspicion of murder in connection with the stabbing. The suspect has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.

A police spokesman said: “Specially-trained officers are supporting the victim’s family during this difficult time.”

HMP Dovegate is operated by Serco and accommodates 1,060 male inmates aged over 21. A Serco representative confirmed: “We can confirm the death of a 42-year-old man at HMP Dovegate. Police are currently investigating the matter.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover further details about the fatal stabbing inside the prison walls.
