Owami Davies was found safe after a police murder investigation came to a halt. The Metropolitan Police received a mandatory death or serious injury (DSI) referral on 6 July, after officers made contact with Owami following her being reported missing.
The referral was made amid a police investigation and arrests on suspicion of Owami’s murder. However, an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) spokesperson later confirmed that the referral was deemed invalid.
Since Owami was found safe and well, and there was no evidence of serious injury, the criteria for the DSI referral were not met. The IOPC informed the Metropolitan Police that it would take no further action regarding the referral.
Commander Paul Brogden of Frontline Policing acknowledged public concerns over the handling of Owami’s search. He confirmed that the Metropolitan Police will conduct a thorough review of all their actions since Owami went missing.
The review will be conducted openly and transparently in partnership with Essex Police. Its aim is to ensure that proper procedures were followed and to identify improvements for future responses to missing persons cases.
