Just after 3pm on January 4th, police were alerted to a suspicious package being thrown onto the grounds of Erlestoke Prison. Witnesses saw a man running on foot before getting into a getaway vehicle that quickly left the scene.
Officers immediately launched a high-speed pursuit, tracking the vehicle to nearby Westbury. Upon arrival, a man abandoned the car and fled across local fields. After a thorough search, a 28-year-old man from Bridgwater was arrested on suspicion of smuggling prohibited items into the prison.
In addition to the man, a 27-year-old woman from Exeter was also detained on suspicion of the same offence. Both individuals have been questioned and subsequently released under investigation as police continue their inquiries.
A Wiltshire Police spokesperson commented, “This was excellent work by officers who conducted extensive searches to locate and arrest a man linked to suspicious activity near Erlestoke Prison. We will keep patrolling the area and working closely with prison staff. Anyone caught trying to throw banned items into the prison will face strict action. This behaviour is completely unacceptable.”
