Counter Terrorism Policing has officially declared the stabbing that occurred in Reading on 20 June a terrorist incident. The shocking attack prompted a swift and major investigation.
Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) have taken over the investigation, working closely with Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Department. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon confirmed the escalation this morning, highlighting the seriousness of the case.
A 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody while detectives continue to piece together the events surrounding the attack.
Thames Valley Chief Constable John Campbell expressed his condolences and cautioned the public, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the events of last night. This was a truly tragic incident. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. While incidents like this are rare, we understand the concern this has caused in Reading.”
He added, “Police cordons remain in place and will be for some time as investigation continues. We urge the public to avoid the area and to refrain from speculation.”
Chief Constable Campbell also appealed for information, stating, “If you have any videos or information, please contact us on 101 referencing 1159 20/6. But please do not share footage on social media out of respect for victims.”
The community remains on edge as authorities continue their investigation. Officials have promised to provide updates as the scene reopens and more details become available.
Counter Terrorism Policing is expected to release further information later today, urging patience and cooperation during this tense time.
