Two Teens Nabbed for Peddling Nitrous Oxide in Whitstable
Two teenagers from Herne Bay have been arrested in Whitstable on suspicion of supplying nitrous oxide, the popular but dangerous “laughing gas.” The 19-year-old and 17-year-old were caught by Canterbury Community Policing Team officers during a late-night patrol on Friday 13 July.
Suspicious Behaviour Leads to Big Score
Officers spotted two cars acting suspiciously on Plough Lane, Swalecliffe just after 10pm. One occupant was seen clutching several boxes of nitrous oxide canisters. Following a search under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016, police seized a whopping 1,824 canisters, cash, mobile phones, and balloons from one of the vehicles.
Teens Released but Under Investigation
The teenagers were arrested and later released pending further investigation. Police continue to probe the supply chain behind the nitrous oxide haul.
Warnings About Deadly Risks of Nitrous Oxide
“People misusing nitrous oxide should be aware that because it deprives the body of oxygen, it can be fatal when taken in excess,” said Detective Constable Allison Bridges.
“The risk spikes if the gas is consumed in enclosed spaces or rapidly in large amounts. It can cause unconsciousness, collapse, heart attacks, and long-term health issues. Mixing nitrous oxide with alcohol only makes it more dangerous.”
“If you have concerns about nitrous oxide use in your community, please contact your local Police Community Support Officer or call Kent Police on 101.”
This arrest sends a clear message: the police are cracking down hard on the illegal supply of psychoactive substances like nitrous oxide, which pose a serious threat to public health and safety.
