A major section of the A27 in Hampshire is closed in both directions this morning after a trailer overturned and spilled cooking oil, causing significant disruption.
The accident occurred just after 4:30am between the A259 Havant Road (Emsworth Junction, Havant) and the A259 Cathedral Way (Fishbourne Roundabout, Chichester). This incident has led to a full closure of this busy stretch, resulting in heavy traffic delays during the early morning hours.
National Highways South-East confirmed the serious nature of the spill in a statement issued at 4:45am: “? NEW INCIDENT – A27 eastbound between A259 near #Emsworth and A259 near #Chichester #Hampshire. ROAD CLOSED due to an overturned trailer and spillage of cooking oil. More info to follow…”
Emergency crews and traffic officers are currently on site, working urgently to clear the overturned trailer and address the hazardous cooking oil spill that has made the entire carriageway slippery and unsafe for drivers.
The cooking oil spill has created extremely slippery road conditions, complicating the cleanup efforts which are expected to take several hours. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.
Traffic diversions are in place, but drivers should anticipate heavy delays on nearby roads including the A259 and routes leading into Chichester and Havant.
With this key section of the A27 closed, commuters are urged to plan ahead by using alternative routes such as the A3 or A272, checking travel updates on National Highways and local radio stations, and allowing extra time for their journeys.
There have been no reports of serious injuries at this time, but emergency services remain on scene managing the situation. Further updates will be provided as the story develops.
