From Plastic Basket to Crufts Finalist: Tilly’s Incredible Rescue Story
A rescue pup dumped in a plastic washing basket on a busy roundabout has gone from abandoned to adored. Tilly, a two-year-old therapy dog, is now a finalist in the prestigious Crufts Hero Award—an inspiring turnaround that’s melting hearts across the UK.
Abandoned as a Pup, Now a Lifeline
Found at just four weeks old with her siblings, Tilly was rescued by New Hope Animal Rescue and lovingly hand-reared in a foster home. Her big break came when Emily Washington from Strood, Kent, adopted her. Recognising Tilly’s special nature, Emily helped transform her into a certified Pets as Therapy dog before she was even nine months old.
- Tilly now visits care homes, schools, colleges, and prisons.
- She offers much-needed comfort and companionship to the vulnerable.
- Beyond public visits, she supports Emily through tough times, including recovery from spinal surgery.
A True Hero for Owner and Community
“Tilly has overcome everything life has thrown at her,” Emily said. “She absolutely shows that rescue dogs can go on to do amazing things. From a dumped puppy to a therapy and assistance dog, she deserves the recognition for what she has done for so many people.”
Trained to alert Emily to migraines and anxiety, and to interrupt stress-driven behaviours, Tilly serves as more than a therapy dog—she’s a vital assistance companion.
Crufts Hero Dog Award: Celebrate Unsung Canine Champions
Tilly’s journey has earned her a spot as a finalist in the Rescue Dog Hero category of the Kennel Club Hero Dog Award—an event dedicated to honouring canine heroes who make a real difference.
“This award is an opportunity to celebrate our unsung canine heroes—those dogs that quietly go about changing people’s lives in their own unique and special way,” said Bill Lambert, Crufts spokesperson. “They keep us safe, show extraordinary courage, and stand by our sides through it all.”
Public votes will decide the winner. The Hero Dog 2025 takes home a £5,000 charity donation, with runners-up receiving £1,000 each.
