Windows PCs Crash After CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor Update
A recent update to CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor has sparked chaos, leaving countless Windows 10 machines crashing and refusing to reboot. Users across forums and social media are reporting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), crippling critical services.
Falcon Sensor at Fault
The culprit? A file inside the Falcon Sensor agent, csagent.sys, designed to block cyber-attacks and monitor threats rapidly. Instead, it’s triggering system crashes nationwide.
“We’re seeing BSOD org-wide that are being caused by csagent.sys, and it’s taking down critical services. I’ll open a ticket, but this is a big deal.”
CrowdStrike Responds with Workaround
The cybersecurity firm has acknowledged the issue in a customer-only advisory titled “Tech-Alert-Windows-crashes-related-to-Falcon-Sensor-2024-07-19.” The company confirmed Windows hosts are suffering blue screen errors linked to their Falcon Sensor.
Chief threat hunter Brody Nisbet shared a temporary fix on X (formerly Twitter):
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment (WRE).
- Go to C:WindowsSystem32driversCrowdStrike.
- Find and delete files named like “C-00000291*.sys”.
- Restart your computer normally.
Nisbet warned, “That workaround won’t help everyone though and I’ve no further actionable help to provide at the minute.”
Users Furious as Protection Backfires
Intended as a shield against attacks, the Falcon Sensor update has instead knocked vital systems offline, stirring frustration among businesses dependent on Windows PCs.
