Flood defence plans for Coggeshall and Feering are now facing public scrutiny as residents and local groups are urged to review the Environment Agency’s proposals ahead of a formal planning application.

Severe flooding affected Coggeshall, Feering, and surrounding areas in 2001, with additional floods occurring in 2012 and 2014. In response, action is finally being taken to improve flood defences in the region.

The Environment Agency has partnered with Blackwater Aggregates to develop a cost-effective solution. Their plan involves constructing an “on-line” dam across the River Blackwater and expanding a storage area upstream of Coggeshall to better manage floodwaters.

Peta Denham, flood and coastal risk manager for Essex and Norfolk, commented on the project: “We have met with Coggeshall Residents Against the Quarry (CRAQ) and MP Priti Patel to address concerns and keep them updated.” She added, “We’ve answered residents’ questions and encourage everyone interested to study the final designs before we submit the proposals to Essex County Council’s Minerals and Planning Authority (MPA). Once submitted, the MPA will consult parish councils and other bodies while locals get the chance to have their say.”

Unfortunately, planned drop-in sessions in Coggeshall and Feering on March 23 and April 3 were cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns, limiting direct public engagement for the time being.

The next steps involve submitting the planning application to Essex County Council’s MPA. The authority will then consult relevant bodies and parish councils, and local residents will be invited to provide feedback on the flood defence measures.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed as this important flood defence plan progresses, aiming to protect the community from future flooding events.
