COVID Vaccines Could Hit UK High Streets in 2024
Get ready for jabs at your local shop! UK retailers are in talks to roll out private COVID vaccinations on the high street, with plans possibly kicking off next year. Health Minister Maria Caulfield has thrown government backing behind the idea of a private market for COVID vaccines in England.
Superdrug and Boots Lead the Charge
Superdrug is front and centre, confirming talks with vaccine suppliers to launch private COVID jabs in 2024. A spokesperson said, “Making healthcare easy to access is our top priority. We’re exploring private COVID vaccinations to see if it’s viable.”
Boots is also in the mix, exploring ways to offer private COVID shots down the line. A Boots rep said, “We’d love to provide private COVID vaccinations and are investigating how to make it happen. We already do flu jabs for both private and NHS customers.”
Government Gives Green Light
Maria Caulfield has openly supported a private COVID vaccine market. Replying to a written question, she said, “COVID vaccines aren’t currently available privately. But like other vaccines, private firms can create a market alongside the NHS if deemed suitable.” She added that talks with key players are ongoing.
COVID Jab Stats Highlight Need for Access
ONS data from March 2, 2023, shows 75.8% of England’s adults have had at least three COVID vaccine doses. Of those eligible for a fourth, 77.7% took it. The eldest got jabbed the most, with 94% of over 80s receiving a fourth dose, compared to 66.4% in their 50s.
Questions Over Access and Costs Loom
While private vaccines on the high street could make jabs easier to get, concerns remain on fair access, pricing, and regulation. Careful coordination between government, retailers, and health providers will be crucial to get the balance right.
