The head of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, has extended a job offer to a former Waitrose employee who was dismissed after confronting a suspected shoplifter in-store.
Known as Lord Walker, Richard Walker made the offer public on LinkedIn, writing: “You’re welcome to a job with us. We even share the same name…” This message was directed at Walker Smith, who claims he lost his job following his brave stand against theft at Waitrose.
Smith’s story quickly went viral, sparking a heated debate over how retail staff should handle incidents of shoplifting.
In a heartfelt post on Sunday, Smith expressed gratitude to those who supported him online and revealed that his main focus now is finding new employment. He said, “Thank you everyone for getting in touch with kind messages and support, I really appreciate it. I didn’t think it would blow up like this but now it has my priority is getting a job.”
Based in Clapham Junction, Smith has nearly two decades of retail experience. He added, “I was at Waitrose for 17 years – warehousing, customer service – except dealing with shoplifters(!), or similar would be amazing. Thank you all.”
