Flood Alert: Heavy Rain to Hit Cuckmere and Bull Rivers from Monday

Residents near the Cuckmere and Bull Rivers brace for rising floodwaters as torrential rain is set to lash the area starting Monday evening. Up to 60mm of rain is expected between 2pm on January 1 and 6pm on January 2, 2024, threatening homes, roads, and fields.

Flooding Set to Hit Hellingly and Alfriston

By 11pm on January 1, floodwaters will start to affect fields, rural lanes, gardens, and properties along Mill Lane and Grove Hill near Grovebridge Farm in Hellingly. The situation worsens at around 3am on January 2, with homes on Station Road, Church Lane, and Church Road likely to flood.

The threat extends to Alfriston by 6am, where North Street, Willows Car Park, River Lane properties including The Old Clergy House and Deans Place Hotel could be under water. Access via Litlington Road may also be cut off due to floodwaters.

More Rain and Rising Rivers to Wreak Havoc Through the Week

Another 20-30mm of rain is forecast for the afternoon of January 4, making matters worse. River levels won’t drop quickly and are expected to remain elevated throughout the week—potentially matching the severe floods seen in early December 2023.

Authorities Urge Caution and Preparation

Local officials advise residents to avoid flood hotspots like Mill Lane and Church Road in Hellingly and North Street in Alfriston. Alternative routes should be planned now. River levels and weather will be closely monitored, with updates due by noon on January 2, 2024.

“Stay alert and prioritise safety in these challenging conditions,” authorities warn.
