Kent Police, working alongside Medway Council and local partners, has initiated a significant crackdown on crime and antisocial behaviour in Chatham town centre, commencing on Friday, 29 May 2026. This new initiative, named Clear, Hold, Build, targets the area bounded by New Cut, Hards Town, Rope Walk, and Medway Street.

The Clear, Hold, Build strategy is a three-phase plan focused on eliminating criminal activity through consistent police enforcement. The first phase, ‘clear’, involves removing offenders from the area. The second phase, ‘hold’, maintains a strong security presence with high-visibility patrols supported by partner organisations and community involvement to sustain progress. The final phase, ‘build’, empowers local residents to develop a resilient and crime-free neighbourhood.

This operation expands on a previously successful Clear, Hold, Build scheme in Chatham’s New Road area, which resulted in a significant reduction in crime reports. The current wider roll-out covers the entire town centre to safeguard more residents and businesses, aiming to create a safer and more welcoming environment free from antisocial behaviour.

Chief Inspector Gary Woodward, Medway District Commander, highlighted the initiative’s proven effectiveness: ‘Schemes such as these have proven effective both locally and nationally to reduce reported offences. We are confident this operation will achieve the same impact.’

Councillor Alex Paterson also emphasised the community benefits: ‘This action will help us all build a safer and thriving community, showing a joint commitment to a better future.’

Kent Police and Medway Council, together with community groups and local businesses, remain united in their efforts to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in Chatham. This collaborative approach demonstrates an ongoing commitment to improving public safety and quality of life throughout the town centre.
